Early Times Report

Srinagar, Apr 19: Finally the Army bunker has been removed at main Handwara chowk in the frontier district of Kupwara, where three persons, including a woman, were killed after troops resorted to firing on demonstrators on April 12.
The bunker has been removed after more than 22 years following massive protests.
Later two more persons were killed in separate firing by security forces in the district on April 13 and 15.
Authorities had imposed curfew on April 13 which was relaxed for some time yesterday before the restrictions were again imposed after massive protests by locals demanding removal of the bunker.
However, today the curfew was relaxed from 0800 hrs for four hours and later the relaxation period was extended following improvement in the situation.
The district administration dismantled the bunker after it was vacated by the Army today. Large number of local residents were cheering when the bunker was being removed.
Shops and business establishments in the town remained closed and very less number of vehicles were on the roads. However, situation on the outskirts was normal.
Police said the bunker came under attack when security forces opened fire in which three lives were lost.
Army has also expressed regret over the loss of life.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara Kumar Rajeev Ranjan said, ''we have decided to re-access the entire situation in the district. In 90s, the situation was entirely different and security force and police bunkers were needed than in the district,'' he said, adding that the situation has changed.
''We will try to remove the bunkers, which are not needed now.
