Let people join hands for restoring peace in Kashmir | | | Peace in Kashmir is in peril.Peace stands destablised in Kashmir either owing to militancy related violence or the outcome of malicious designs of mischief mongers.Whatever are the reasons people, irrespective of their political affiliation should come forward and help the Government in restoring peace which is mandatory for various development activities.Unrest in Kashmir may cast a thick shadow on tourist flow to Kashmir. And the tourist season to Kashmir is expected to start from early next month and if the current spell of unrest prevails not may excursionists and holidayers are expected to visit Kashmir.Well it is but normal. Tourists who spend lakhs of rupees on their sojourn in Kashmir do not want to get disturbed by prolonged shutdowns and clashes between protesters and the security forces. At time a section of people are provoked to indulge in violence for which they pay the penalty. And their penalty in the shape of death triggers bigger protests and clashes with security forces. It is an endless chain of events and only people with vision for peace can intervene and marginalise mischief mongers. The economy in Kashmir rests on the flow of tourist traffic to the valley.Whenever the flow is heavy transporters, hoteliers, traders, houseboat owners, ponywallas get a chance to earn a fortune because invariably tourists, whether home or foreign, are seen to be liberal in spending. Kashmir's handicrafts and handloom items usually remain linked to tourist traffic. A good tourist season is a boon to those dealing with handicrafts and handloom items. Apart from tourist season even the pilgrim tourism is feared to be affected by the ongoing disturbed conditions. No doubt it may be a 45-day long pilgrim season to holy cave of Amarnath, but one can imagine pecuniary gains traders, transporters, hoteliers and houseboat owners experience. It is almost one-time business for ponywallas and porters if between three and five lakh pilgrims visit the holy cave. As far as pilgrimage to the holy shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi is concerned it is almost a year round programme and between 70 and 80 lakh pilgrims visit the holy shrine per year. If part of these pilgrims get time to visit Kashmir, before or after the yatra, it would be a source of added profit to traders and transporters besides hoteliers. During the last 30 years more than 30 new hotels have been built in Srinagar and other tourist resorts and more than 200 new shops have been added to the existing mushroom growth of shopping centres and all these centres await a good tourist season. If the ongoing disturbed security scenario does not end shortly these traders may suffer heavy losses. Apart from tourism based economy the valley needs peace to ensure proper development. Let the Government be able to think about new projects that could promote economy of people. The valley is tormented by two major problems. One is the energy crisis which has become endemic in the Jammu region too. Second problem is poor Government and private investment in the sector of industry. During the last over 26 years neither the central Government nor the private sector has been in a mood to invest in the sector of industry in Kashmir because of disturbed security scenario. And only peace can motivate the Government and the private sector to invest in the sector of industry which could solve the problem of unemployment. The Government needs peace so that its experts can devise ways for increasing power generation needed to tackle the ongoing energy crisis. And senior people and prominent citizens should join hands with the Government in restoring peace because peace and progress co-exist. |
