Scorching heat, erratic water supply resulting in drought like situation in Seswan | | | Early Times Report KATHUA, May 15: Scorching heat obviously raises number of problems for people like shortage of water, but 5000 villagers of Village Seswan Block Barnoti are being victimized by negligence of Public Health Engineering PHE department. Thousands of people are without PHE water supply for last few months but their sufferings have crossed all limits from last 40 consecutive days when PHE failed to provide water to them. Women, children and even handicapped are forced to bring water from several miles in scorching heat, while middle class people purchasie water tank from private distributors who sell water at unreasonable rates. Live stock is dying and people are abandoning their cattle and animals. Arrival of water tank in the village triggers clashes, which at times turn violent and the People in protest are blocking link roads, holding agitations against PHE but to no avail. Sushma & Santosh, both house wives, said they were carrying water from nearby villages that affected their daily routine. They demanded regular water supply to save precious lives. Prem Sharma Sarpanch Seswan said lethargy on the part of PHE officials who could not take repair defunct motor pump. He informed that people demanded stand by motor so that water supply could be maintained. Mohan Lal, a local, said PHE department misappropriates government funds as officials don't repair the defunct motor properly. He alleged that substandard separate parts are being used in repair resulting in repeated breakdowns of motor. When contacted, Summit Puri XEn PHE, denied claims of public and said water pump was being repaired regularly. He said there is no breakdown in water supply despite of mass strike of daily wagers. The XEn said peoples' demand of stand-by water pumps is subject to allocation of funds. |
