PIL seeks shifting of Dogra Art, Museum & Archives to safer place

Jammu, JULY 9: In a Public Interest Litigation filed by Shah Mohammad Choudhary founder Member of Gujjar Charitable Trust seeking direction to State to shift Dogra Art, Museum and Archives, presently housed in a dilapidated and unsafe building situated at Mubarak Mandi Jammu to any other safer place.
In the PIL, petitioner further sought direction from the High Court to State to preserve, protect and maintain all the precious collections /record lying in the Dogra Art, Museum and Archives, Mubarak Mandi Jammu and construct new building of Dogra Art, Museum and Archives at some prominent/accessible place at Jammu and to provide required land and sufficient funds for the said purpose.
The petitioner submitted that the department of Archives, Archaeology and Museums with its primary mandate to preserve the tangible cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir State is a conglomerate of three departments viz, Archives, Archaeology and Museums.
The respondent department has the distinction of possessing of one of the oldest Archival Repositories in the sub-continent with its record holdings dating back to Mugal period i.e., 1724 AD.
The two state Museums (SPS Museum Srinagar and Dogra Art Museum Jammu) are known world-over for their unique collections portraying the distinct and diverse cultural heritage of the land from pre Christian Era to 20th Century and it was the auspicious 54th year of the 20th Century AD, the Dogra Art Gallery was established in Jammu with rear collection of Miniature Paintings from Basholi school and other artifacts depicting the rich Culture Heritage of the State.
The gallery was inaugurated by the first President of India Rajender Prasad on May 28th 1954, at Gandhi Bhawan Jammu adjacent to Civil Secretariat, Jammu.
Subsequently in the year 1991, the Gallery was upgraded into a multipurpose Museum and the collections which had grown since its establishment shifted to the Pink/Marble Hall situated in the historic Mubarak Mandi Heritage Complex, Jammu and the upgraded Museum, with elegantly displayed artefacts was inaugurated by the then Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Girish Chander Saxena on January 25th, 1991.
As on date, the museum has in its possession over 5500 works of exquisite art, spanning over the last 1600 years. The Museum is known for its sumptuous and world famous collections of Rasmanjari series of Basohli Paintings. The Museum collections are Miniature Paintings of different schools, Manuscripts, Dogra Arms and Armory, Numismatics, Archaeology, Dogra Costumes, Jewellery, Metal ware, Musical Instruments and Gallery of Modern Art.
