Amarnath Yatra, SF personnel, crowded places were prime targets | Burhan, accomplices were planning major strikes | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 9: The poster boy of Hizbul-Mujahideen, Burhan Wani, and his two associates, who were shot dead by the personnel of Special Operations Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Friday in Kokernag area of south Kashmir, were reportedly planning to hold a meeting in coming days to intensify the attacks on the security forces and the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, sources told Early Times on Saturday. They said that Burhan and his two associates were trapped following the intelligence input about their presence at Bemdura village in Kokernag area. "The trio had shifted their base to Kokernag to plan a major strike in coming days enroute Amarnath cave shrine. Had they not been spotted they were planning to mobilize more militants present in south Kashmir to carry out a few attacks to create fear among the Amarnath pilgrims and the local population ," sources revealed. They said, "The entire operation to kill Burhan and his associates was carried out swiftly and it got over within an hour. When the gunfight was on, the slain militants were communicating with each other through wireless sets and as per the intercepts one among the three militants was keen to surrender but two others were not ready to lay down their arms." Militants, according to the sources, are under tremendous pressure to show their presence as their handlers sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) want them to foment trouble and keep the pot boiling. "The intercepts of communications between militants and their handlers sitting in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) suggest that militants have been asked to perform or perish. Militants present in Kashmir are on the run as the security forces have tightened noose around them. Their handlers have asked them to intensify their activities in crowded places so that if SF personnel retaliate civilians would also get killed and situation would become volatile," sources added. They said, "Local youth who were lured by the recruiters have realized that they have messed up their lives and many of them are indicating that they want to surrender. In fact in May this year a close aide of Burhan, Tariq Pandit, had surrendered. During questioning he revealed that youth who have joined militant ranks are fed up and want to lay down the arms." Sources said, "We are looking into all the aspects and are trying to ascertain why did Burhan shift his base to Kokernag soon after the Amarnath Yatra commenced. It seems by eliminating Burhan and his two associates we have foiled the plan of militants to target the ongoing Yatra, but we cannot be complacent till the annual pilgrimage ends." |
