SRINAGAR, July 9: At least nine civilians were killed while as scores sustained injuries during day long clashes between groups of agitating youth and police as well as security forces personnel in different places of Kashmir on Saturday.
The clashes broke out following the killing of top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. Around 100 police and security forces personnel also sustained injuries during the clashes that crippled life across the Valley.
At the same time three police personnel are missing from South Kashmir. Unofficial reports said that 200 injured persons are receiving treatment at different hospitals in the valley. Reports reaching here said that people mostly youth came out in good numbers at various places across Kashmir and registered protest against the killing of Burhan. The protesters pelted stones on police as well and security forces. The forces lobbed smoke shells on the protesters and had to open fire at many places in order to control the situation.
Addressing a news conference here, Additional Director General of Police (CID) S M Sahai and Inspector General of Police Kashmir zone Javed Mujtaba Gillani said that eight civilians lost their lives during the ongoing violence in Kashmir following the killing of Burhan while one among them died due to drowning.
At a couple of places during crowd control eight people Amir Bashir Khan of Veerinag, Dooru, Saqib Manzoor Mir of Khundroo Achabal, Aijaz Ahmad Thakur, of Siligam Ashmuqam, Mohammed Asif Dar of Halpora Kokernag, Showkat Ahmad of Hassanpora Arwani Bijbehara, Mohammad Safer Bhat of Cherigam Pahalgam, Bilal Ahmad Shah of Wagoor Dooru, Shah Danish of Achabal died. Zubair Ahmed, resident of Kulgam, who was injured on Friday, succumbed to his injuries today.
"Unruly mobs attacked security forces, civil, police establishments and vital installations throughout the valley," said Sahai and Geelani. They said that violent incidents of arson and stone pelting were reported from Achabal, Kokernag, Kund, Qazigund, Damhal Hanjipora, Vessu, Dooru, Sangam, Awantipora, Pulwama, Bomai, Sopore, Baramulla, Palhallan, Pattan, Delina, Gantamullah, Sheeri, Kreeri, Lalpora, Bandipora, Narbal, Lasjan, Barzullah, Nowgam, Tengpora and Batmaloo.
They said that at many places mob forcibly tried to enter security force establishments with the intention to seize weapons and harm force personnel. Two police stations at Damhal Hanjipora, Achabal, tehsil office Kokernag and police post Kund, Qazigund were set on fire by the unruly mobs.
"The mob looted weapons from police station Damhal Hanjipora and police personnel were fired upon. Three police men are missing. The camps of Sangam, Larnoo, Seer, Gopalpora, Mattan Kokernag, Dooru and Janglat Mandi were attacked," they said.
Reports said that a mob decamped with weapons from a police station in South Kashmir's Kulgam district and attacked policemen with the same weapons. The incident happened in Damhal Hanjipora area of Kulgam. The mob used those weapons to attack the police personnel there because of which some of the police personnel got bullet injuries.
A police spokesman said that following the killing of three militants in Verinag yesterday, violent clashes occurred in various parts of the valley today. Unruly mobs attacked security forces, civil, police establishments, and vital installations throughout the valley.
"An unruly mob looted weapons from Police Station DH Pora and police personnel were fired upon. Three police men are missing. The security force camps, police stations/posts of Sangam, Seer, Gopalpora, Mattan, Larnoo Kokernag, Dooru, Vessu, Janglat Mandi, Behibagh Kulgam, Barzulla, Awantipora, Pulwama, Liter Pulwama, minority picket Hall Pulwama, Newa Pulwama, , Pattan, Baramulla, Palhalan, Gantamulla, Sheeri, Kreeri, Bandipora, Lalpora, Bomie Nowgam, Batamaloo, Police Post Humhama and, GO's Mess Humhama were damaged.
Reports said that angry youth set on fire a bunker of Border Security Force (BSF) in North Kashmir's Bandipora district. The BSF personnel resorted to aerial firing and tear smoke shells to disperse the agitated youth. Massive clashes erupted in Baramulla town. The protesters marched towards the Tehsil road where they attacked a police station with rocks.
Police and paramilitary forces swung into action and pushed the protesters towards Cement Bridge where massive clashes are still ongoing. In Palhallan youths attacked a police post on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway. The forces responded with teargas shelling, pushing the youths towards the interiors of the locality. Clashes erupted in Chichlora area near Magam town on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road. Police and security forces lobbed teargas shells at the protesters who were pelting stones.
Massive protests erupted in Kaimoh and adjoining villages of Khudwani and Redwani in South Kashmir's Kulgam district. In Anantnag town, the protesters defied curfew at several places. Reports of protests have also been received from Seer, Mattan, Kokernag and some villages of Kulgam district.
In the Srinagar city clashes erupted between youth and forces in Maisuma area. Protesters mostly youth took to streets and pelted stones on forces who later disbursed to tear smoke shells to disperse the youth. Clashes also took place in Humhama area of Budgam district. Police resorted to tear smoke shells to disperse the youth who were throwing stones on them. Reports of clashes were also reported from Hyderpora and Rawalpora areas.
Reports said that 13 youth were injured during the clashes between youth and security forces in Sopore area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district. The injured were shifted to SDH Sopore for treatment. In Bumai area, people also took to streets and raised pro-freedom slogans.
Meanwhile, normal life was affected due to the enforcement of restrictions in most areas of downtown Srinagar and majority of the towns in South Kashmir. At the other places normal life got crippled due to the strike call given by the separatists against the killing of HM Commander. Traffic on Srinagar-Jammu national highway got affected with people erecting barricades in the form of burnt tyres at various places. No fresh batch of Amarnath Yatris was allowed to move towards the cave from Jammu due to turbulent situation in the valley.
Burhan who was killed in gunfight with police and security forces in Bumdoora village of Kokernag in South Kashmir's Anantnag district had joined Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in 2010. His two associates were also killed in the encounter that got culminated within an hour or so. Thousands of people assembled at Eidgah in Tral in South Kashmir to offer funeral prayers to the slain militant commander.
