SRINAGAR, July 10: Six more persons including a police driver were killed in unabated violence across Kashmir for the second running day on Sunday. With this the death toll in the violent protests that erupted following the killing of self-styled Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani reached 21.
Four civilians who were critically injured in separate firing incidents on Saturday succumbed to their injuries at different hospitals today.
Reports said that people mostly youth took to the streets at various places in Kashmir and registered protest against the killing of Burhan. The protesters pelted stones on police and security forces with the same being retaliated by teargas shelling. At some places the police and security forces personnel opened fire in order to bring the situation under control.
In Pampore area of Pulwama district a youth identified as Sameer Ahmad died after being hit by a bullet in the Namblabal locality early in the morning. Police and security forces opened fire on a group of protesters in the locality when they carried out strong protests.
In the Newa area of South Kashmir's Pulwama district angry youths resorted to heavy stone pelting on police and security forces. The police and security forces resorted to teargas shelling in order to bring the situation under control. However, after failing to control the mob the forces opened fire on protesters leading to death of one person and injuries to some others. The deceased was identified as Irfan Ahmad Malik.
In the Litter area of the same district a civilian sustained serious injuries when police and security forces opened fire on a group of protesters mostly youth. The civilian was rushed to District Hospital Pulwama where doctors declared him as brought dead. He was identified as Fayaz Ahmad Waza. Some other people sustained injuries in these clashes as well.
In the Lasipora area a civilian identified as Gulzar Ahmad Pandit died after he was hit by a bullet while taking part in a protest demonstration. Trouble broke out in the area after groups of agitated people clashed with police and security forces. Forces tried to bring the situation under control by firing teargas shells and after failing to do so they opened fire on the protesters.
In the Tengpora area falling in the outskirts of Srinagar city one person died in the late evening when a group of agitators clashed with police and security forces. Reports said that as the forces were withdrawing from the area they came under intense stone pelting from protesters. The killed civilian has been identified as Shabir Ahmad.
In the Sangam area of South Kashmir's Anantnag district, a police driver identified as Afroz Ahmad got drowned when he was pushed along with his mobile bunker vehicle into the river Jhelum. Efforts have been launched to retrieve the body of the police driver and the same was yet to be retrieved when last reports came in.
Reports reaching here said that people took to streets in Central, South and North Kashmir and registered protest against the death of Burhan. Police and security forces resorted to teargas shelling so as to bring the situation under control. Dozens of persons sustained injuries in these clashes with forces opening fire at some places.
Massive protests were reported from many areas of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Budgam, Soibugh, Mirgund, Anantnag, Bijbehara, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Tral, Newa, Pampore, Awantipora, Janglat Mandi, Ashajipora, Achabal, Dooru, Kokernag, Shangus, Aishmuqam, Baramulla, Bandipora, Kupwara, Lolab, Lalpora, Trehgam, Handwara, Langate, Kanispora, Khawaja Bagh, Delina, Palhallan and Pattan.
A police spokesman said that the situation in valley remained under control today though incidents of arson and mob attacks were reported. The incidents of stone pelting were reported from Newa Pulwama, Main Town Shopian, Lasipora, Rajpora, Hall Pulwama, Litter, Tahab Pulwama, Tanchibagh Pampore, Damhal, Sangam, Zainapora, Qoimoh, Yaripora, Behibagh Kulgam, Vailoo, Warpora Sopore, Tikipora Sogam, Lalpora Kupwara, Kanli Bagh Baramulla, Arampora Sopore, Tarzoo, Batmaloo, Qamriya Ganderbal, Soibugh Budgam, Mirgund and Sheikhpora.
"During the law and order situations at Newa, Lasipora, Litter in Pulwama three persons namely Irfan Ahmad Malik resident of Newa-Pulwama, Gulzar Ahmad Pandit resident of Mohanpora-Shopian and Fayaz Ahmad Waza resident of Litter-Pulwama got injured and later on succumbed to their injuries. One Police vehicle and some seized vehicles were set on fire at Lasipora-Pulwama when the arsonists attacked the police post," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that unruly mobs set on fire GRP Guard room and RPF Barrack at Bijbehara Railway Station and Police Post Damhal Khushipora. He said that an unruly mob also set on fire a single storied structure at Soibugh-Budgam from where earlier police post Soibugh used to function.
"Hooligans pushed a police vehicle along with the driver, Afroz Ahmad into the river Jhelum at Sangam resulting in death of the driver. An unruly mob attacked Fire Services vehicle which was on way to Sangam on a call near Bijbehara. The call later proved to be a hoax. The vehicle was damaged in the said incident," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that militants lobbed two grenades on CRPF deployed on law & order duties in Murran Chowk resulting in injuries to some CRPF personnel. He that in Shopian the vehicle of SP Shopian was fired upon and a grenade was also lobbed. Militants also fired upon the police post Uttressu. A number of police establishments and camps were also attacked during the day resulting in damage to the property and injuries to scores of Police and CRPF personnel, he said. |
