PDP-BJP Govt's Ladli Beti scheme yet to take off | | | Arun Singh Early Times Report Jammu, July 22: State government's much touted 'Ladli Beti Scheme' is yet to take off since it is yet to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the banks. According to sources, banks have refused to grant amount announced till date. Sources told Early Times that Jammu and Kashmir government last year had launched a state-sponsored social assistance scheme for girl child 'Ladli Beti' which initially started in six districts including Kathua, Jammu, Samba, Budgam, Pulwama and Anantnag on pilot basis exhibiting with low child sex ratio. "As per scheme, the amount of Rs 6.5 lakh will be given to the girl child after she has attained 21 years of age but government has been facing huge trouble due to its failure to sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with any bank. It could not convince any private players to materialize the scheme as most of banks have refused to provide the amount announced by the government," they said further adding that banks maintained that government should have consulted the banks before announcement and it took decision unilaterally as providing assistance of such huge amount is not possible for them. They said that some banks had agreed to provide amount upto Rs 6 lakh but government was not in position to accept it. It is very surprising that how Finance Department came to conclusion of amount Rs 6.5 lakh without working out the technical issues attached to it as a result the scheme has now become something which cannot be either swallowed or chewed by the government, they added. "Around 2300 cases have been approved by State Mission Director ICDS till the launch of scheme and about 1400 cases are in pipeline," they added. Pertinently, the scheme addresses the concerns of girl's right from birth to adulthood by providing financial security to the girls. Only those girls child, born to parents with annual income from all sources less than Rs 75,000 Per Annum, shall be eligible for the benefits under the scheme. Under the scheme, the state government will contribute Rs 1,000 per month towards the birth of every girl child with effect from April 1, 2015 for the next 14 years and upon reaching the age of 21, the girl child would receive a sum of Rs 6.5 lakh. |
