Add Dogriyat, Ladakhiyat to Insaniyat- Jamhooriyat-Kashmiriyat formulation | Rajya Sabha Debate | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 11: Notwithstanding the fact that the Wednesday debate in the Rajya Sabha on the Kashmir unrest was fundamentally Kashmir-centric and that all secular outfits spoke for Kashmir, Kashmiri alienation and what not, two lawmakers - both from Jammu - did some plain-speaking and without questioning the so-called liberal and secular Kashmiriyat told the Rajya Sabha that Jammu and Ladakh too have distinct identity and these should be appreciated. Congress MP Karan Singh, whose "state had only acceded and not merged with India" statement and assertion that the relations between India and J&K had to be governed as per Article 370 shocked the whole nation in general and the very vast constituency in the state, especially Jammu and Ladakh, in particular, asked the Rajya Sabha to also add "Dogriyat and Ladakhiyat to the Vajpayee's (controversial) Insaniyat-Jamhooriyat-Kashmiriyat formulation". It was perhaps for the first time that any lawmaker made such a statement in or outside the Parliament. Besides, he made it loud and clear that Kashmir was just one of the five regions of the state and the people of Jammu and Ladakh have their own problems and aspirations. Another MP didn't really say Dogriyat and Ladakhiyat, but he did say in his way what was this hullaballu about Insaniyat- Jamhooriyat-Kashmiriyat as Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmiri Hindus were also stakeholders. He, however, like Karan Singh, disappointed the nation by giving credit to the Kashmiri Muslims for the accession of the state with India. It would have been better had he told the Rajya Sabha that it was the prerogative of Maharaja Hari Singh to decide the political fate of Jammu and Kashmir and he used it on October 26, 1947 by acceding the state to India. But this is not the point under discussion. The point under discussion is that both Karan Singh and the MP did talk about the importance of Jammu and Ladakh whatever the reason and whatever the compulsion. The fact of the matter is that it was for the first time that Kashmiriyat got some drubbing. |
