'Don't hoist tricolor anywhere' | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 11: As the Kashmir unrest entered its 35th day today the separatists on Thursday openly dared government against the Independence Day celebrations in the state, putting the security agencies on tenterhooks. In the latest weeklong protest calendar issued by the "United Hurriyat", special "dos and don'ts" have been mentioned for August 15 when the country celebrates the Independence Day. Officials said it was open defiance of the law of the land adding that warning seems to be implementation of the orders of Pakistani-handlers of the Hurriyat leaders sitting in their cozy apartments across the border. While threatening the people to observer the day as "black day and civil curfew", the separatists have also warned government officials not to hoist the tricolor anywhere at government functions on the day. "From 7:00 am onwards block all the roads towards and around the place of celebration of Indian Independence day; District development commissioners are asked not to hoist the Indian Flag in any part of the Jammu and Kashmir," reads the calendar issued by the Hurriyat. Even the children have not been spared. "Parents are directed not to send their wards for participation in these celebrations," the Hurriyat handout reads. "Raise black flags on your houses, shops, market centers and local chowks wear black dresses or black bands on this day. Black Day for Azad Kashmir as well; all the political parties and people of Azad Kashmir hold protests with black flags against Indian occupation," reads the calendar, a copy of which lies with Early Times. The Hurriyat wants to "internationalize" the protests on the Independence Day. "NRKs to protest with black flags in front of embassies all over the world," the calendar reads. Officials said it was for the first time that the Hurriyat has openly warned the officials not to hoist the tricolor. "The situation this time is very tense as we never faced such a threat before. It seems that the separatists want to put taboo on the Independence Day celebrations which happen to be birthright of every citizen of India. This is intolerable," said a group of officials pleading anonymity. For over a month on, since the day the day militant commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani was killed, the Valley continues to be on the boil. In his recent interview to media, IGP Kashmir SJM Geelani said there was no change in ground situation. Amid siege and curfew, the separatists have been issuing protests calendars to defy government efforts aimed towards restoration of law and order in the Valley. Even as the police have openly offered protection to traders who defy the separatist programs, there has been no breakthrough to end the deadlock. Officials believe that people are scared of Hurriyat leaders and thus "don't want to challenge their authority." While Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has been facing a tough time in tackling the situation, the separatists are unwilling to give her a chance to restore peace in the Valley. |
