Jammu that upset Sitaram in Rajya Sabha | Left of separatists | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 11: Jammu and Ladakh are no more than Kashmir colonies. This is the general view in Jammu and it is based on the premise that all in Delhi talks about Kashmir Valley, Kashmiri secularism and Kashmiri liberal ethos, notwithstanding the fact that it is one community and one religion region. However, on Wednesday, one MP virtually objected to the speech that was delivered by Jammu-based MP Shamsher Singh Manhas. Manhas had asked the Rajya Sabha not to ignore Jammu and its youth. He had also talked about unemployment in Jammu province and asked should the unemployed youth in Jammu also indulge in the activities the Kashmiri youth had been indulging? Besides, he referred to the problems being faced by the border people. It was this intervention of Manhas which upset the CPI-M national general secretary Sitaram Yechury. Sitaram got so disturbed that he started his intervention in the Rajya Sabha with the remark that the MP from Jammu didn't do a right thing by bringing in the debate Jammu and Jammu's problems. "Today, the House is discussing very important and serious issue. Kashmir is burning. There is the need to discuss Kashmir, Kashmir unrest and what has been happening in Kashmir. It was not really proper top bring in the debate Jammu and Jammu's problem," he, among other things, said. And, what did Sitaram say? Completely overlooking the needs, compulsions and aspirations of the people of Jammu, Sitaram asked the government to talk to Pakistan, restore pre-1953 politico-constitutional position in the state, implement all the recommendations of the Manmohan Singh-constituted Working Groups, withdraw anti-terror laws, rein in the armed forces and so on. It was disgusting to find Sitaram misusing the platform of Rajya Sabha for questioning Manhas' approach and questioning the very validity of the central laws in the J&K. What was most disgusting was that no one interrupted him when Sitaram displayed his bias against Jammu shamelessly and in a most brazen manner. He should have been snubbed then and there, but it didn't happen. Very unfortunate. In any case, credit must be given to Manhas, who said what he said. |
