Army convoy attacked; 2 soldiers, cop killed | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 16 Two Army soldiers and a JK Police constable were killed and six security personnel sustained injuries in a militant ambush in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Srinagar-Uri highway on Wednesday morning, officials said. They said the militants ambushed an Army convoy at Khawajabagh, three km from Baramulla, at 0203 hrs. Two Army soldiers and JK police constable were killed and six others were wounded, they said, adding the injured were airlifted to 92 Army base hospital. The militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness. However, the entire area was sealed and a massive hunt has been launched to nab the militants responsible for the attack. Army convoys have been operating during the night on the highway to avoid day protests since July 9, a day after the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani and two other militants in an encounter at Kokernag in south Kashmir. Meanwhile, militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) has claimed responsibility for ambushing an Army convoy in Baramulla, resulting in killing of two soldiers and a policeman. The attack came two days after militants attacked a CRPF party at Nowahata in old city on August 15 in which a Commanding officer from Jharkhand was killed and nine other security force personnel were injured. Two foreign militants involved in the attack were also killed in the retaliatory fire by security forces. Five foreign militants were also killed in the same day near Line of Control (LoC) in Uri sector after they infiltrated into this side from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).
