Day 40: Kashmir reels under curfew, shutdown | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Aug 17: Normal life in Kashmir remained paralyzed for 40th running day on Wednesday in wake of continuous curfew and shutdown. Pertinently, Kashmir is under curfew after the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani on July 8 triggered a wave of protests. Sixty fiver persons have died in the unrest which began on July 9. Authorities on Wednesday imposed strict restrictions across Kashmir to thwart the United Nations (UN) chalo march the call for which was given by separatists. Reports said that large contingent of police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel were deployed in and around the UN office Sonawar. Barricades and barbed wires had been erected at different points to restrict the movement of the people. Reports said that Hurriyat (M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was arrested outside his Nageen residence when he tried marching towards United Nations office in Srinagar. Police also detained Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani when he tried to march towards the UN Office in Sonawar. Witnesses said that Geelani along with his associates tried to march towards the UN Office. However, a large posse of police didn't allow him to move and detained him soon after he stepped out from his Hyderpora residence.
