Overloaded vehicles ply with impunity | | | M S NAZKI Early Times Report
Poonch, Sept 25: Overloaded Tatasumo, buses ferrying passengers and schoolchildren, could effortlessly be spotted in and around the Mendhar Town. Rash driving, overloading, non seriousness and a totally casual approach towards the traffic norms are the reasons for accidents in our State. Almost daily, there is news of an accident in the papers and we just regret and feel bad for some time and then again restore to our routine activities. One can find an overloaded Tatasumo and buses at any route and no one is there to keep a check on this. All credits to the flourished Hafta system. It's all due to this that the men in blue turn a blind eye towards this. An overloaded Tatasumo mini bus with students hanging at the back and at the entrance moves freely on Mendhar routes as no traffic cop dares to fine him. No one questions the driver or conductor or even these stupid passengers who travel holding the back ladder of the Tatasumo and buses Lady passengers often complain about the atmosphere in the Tatasumo buses, where unscrupulous elements indulge in eve teasing. Women have to face the problem because of over loading in these Tatasumo buses Sultana Koser a resident of Mendhar said, "It is really sad that the environment in the buses, Tatsumo is unscrupulous and many a time cases of eve teasing have been reported. Women passengers have to face the problem because of over loading in these Tatasumo buses. If questioned they say there is no space what can we do? The problem of overloading is at its peak in Tatasumo on our route i.e Harni Kalaban, Balakote Mankote, Sagra Salwah, Pathanateer Dharana. There is traffic naka at Mendhar and one can find men in blue gossiping and making money. I have never seen these cops dealing strictly with Tatasumo operators for overloading. They just overlook the whole scene. It is due to the casual approach of these cops we have to suffer. The driver and conductor often say if traffic police has no objection why are you objecting, travel or leave. This is really not done. It is a serious matter and one should take appropriate measures to handle the situation, said Koser "Overloading has become a common problem in Mendhar Area but it is sad that the authorities seem to be reluctant in initiating action against these violators," Waqar Khan , a student GDC Mendhar said. He added that there is traffic Naka at the Sangla Chowk from where these vehicles pass but still the cops do not show any interest to curb the menace. Tariq Khan, general secretary press council of Mendhar Poonch , shared, " Tatasumo drivers always try to make good profit by resorting to overloading. Unfortunately, the policemen don't take action against the violators as the latter have developed a nexus with them and they pay them Hafta (bribe) for illegal ferrying of more passengers than the seating capacity of their vehicles. Students can be seen hanging at the back and sometimes at the main entrance of the Tatasumo and buses and this gives invitation to accidents." Shalda Khan a college student shared, "It is very difficult to travel in an overloaded vehicle but we are left with no other option as all the Tatasumo and buses are overloaded and drivers won't move the vehicle till the Tatasumo is overloaded. This overloading many a time results in fatal accidents. I strongly believe that it is high time we, the youngsters should take some initiative but we too cannot do anything without the cooperation of Traffic Police. Traffic cops need to cooperate and take strict action against the violators. Moreover, there is a need to educate people about the traffic laws." |
