Panic in border villages, farming 'n' trading community sitting on edge | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Sept 30: The business and farming community across Jammu region is living on the edge ever since India has avenged martyrdom of 19 of its soldiers by carrying out surgical strikes inside PoK and dismantling several terror launch pads. According to some locals in bordering villages of Jammu region, the fresh hostilities ahead of festive season and peak harvesting season does not augur well for the farmers and local businessmen who already are reeling under financial crisis owing to three month long shut down in Kashmir valley. Fear of fresh exchange of firing across International border and along the line of control is bothering farmers of Jammu region as their crops are standing tall in the agricultural fields and they are facing hardships in carrying out their routine work. If recalled here there was huge migration from border villages in Aug-Oct 2014, Aug 2015 due to heavy shelling and firing from across the border by Pakistan. In the wake of heat between India and Pakistan following the 'surgical strikes' on seven launch pads along Line of Control (LoC), the government authorities have started relocating civilian population to safer areas. And during the process the farmers are forced by circumstances to either stay put at their own risk or leave behind their crops at the mercy of Pak rangers as fresh mortar shelling may ruin the standing crops. As per rough estimates at least 30,000 hectares of agricultural land is ready for harvesting, some local said. "If there will be fresh escalation of tension and ceasefire violations along the International border we would suffer huge losses," said an elderly farmer of RS Pura belt- also known rice bowl of Basmati Rice. While people are moving to safer places as identified by the administrative authorities, the Border Security Forces (BSF) is on high alert and maintaining a tight vigil on the border especially after receiving orders from the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh of tackling the situation on the border firmly. The situation in frontier districts of Rajouri and Poonch is equally volatile and tense where the people also have started shifting to safer places from home towns in close vicinity of Line of Control. Naseem Akhtar of forward village Goutrian said, "We are living in constant fear of escalation of tension between India and Pakistan. "We fear for our life and property", we appeal to the state/centre govt to relocated civilians living in the direct line of fire to safer places before escalating tensions with the neighbouring country," he added. Not only farmers but business community and students too are also equally worried as educational institutions have been ordered to be closed by administration while markets wore deserted looks due to panic in border villages. "We were looking forward to earn profits in the coming festive season but before we could earn profit we have already started counting losses", a businessman from Arnia area claimed. |
