Hypocrisy, thy name is Abdullahs | Surgical strike on Pak | | Saqib Ahmad ET Report SRINAGAR, Sept 30: Pakistan didn't change its attitude during the last many decades, but what is surprising is that National Conference patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, who was once advocating bombardment of Pakistan, is now calling for restraint after Indian army's surgical attacks on the neighbouring country. The surgical strikes in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir were well hailed across the country, but it was Farooq Abdullah who called for restraint while his son and former CM, Omar Abdullah, maintained silence. Similarly, the father-son duo have been demanding release of youth who participated in stone pelting, while in 2010, they used to call them drug addicts. "We hope cooler heads will prevail and the ceasefire of 2003 will be upheld. Our thoughts are with people living along the Line of Control and the International Border as it is they who suffer the most in times of such escalation", Farooq Abdullah said on Thursday. He said both India and Pakistan should exercise restraint and open all channels of communications to de-escalate the situation along the Line of Control and the International Border. When in power, Dr Farooq had been advocating bombarding Pakistan for sponsoring terrorism. Farooq Abdullah's repeated statements during his tenure between 1996 and 2002 were against Pakistan as he used to advocate bombardment of terror infrastructure in the neighbouring country and part of Kashmir controlled by it. Similarly in 2013, when Omar was the CM, he asked the government of India to answer a fire with a fire if Pakistan continued to violate cease-fire along the LoC and International Border. He said "other alternatives" can be explored besides talking if Pakistan continued to violate ceasefire along the Jammu and Kashmir's borders. "The continuous ceasefire violations by Pakistan along LoC will not be tolerated and government of India should take up the issue seriously with Pakistan. If Pakistan will continuously violate the ceasefire, we will not respond only with talks but we will look for other alternatives. We know how to answer a fire with a fire but we are still maintaining calm," Omar has said in 2013. But even after Uri and Pathankot, Omar has completely maintained silence, exposing his and his father's hypocrisy. The father-son duo has also been slamming the government for arresting those who participate in violent protests. But during 2010 when 120 people lost their lives, Omar used to say that it was imperative for law and order to arrest those who indulge in stone pelting. |
