In 'times of war,' GMC Jammu unprepared to tackle emergencies | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 6: At a time when the borders are on the boil, the premier hospital of Jammu province, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) is unprepared to tackle the emergency situation. If sources are to be believed, last week the only oxygen plant in the hospital developed a technical snag following which only one line of oxygen supply is working in the ICU ward of the Emergency Block of the hospital. "Though administration of the hospital is putting patients on oxygen cylinders to meet the requirement, in any emergency or disaster situation would take ugly turn", said a source. Source further claimed that there are so many essential equipment which frequently break down and become non-functional, hence adding to the problems during the any emergency. "No measures have been taken to rectify the snag in the oxygen plat of the hospital which clearly indicates the insensitivity of the hospital administration towards any emergency," said sources. A senior doctor in the hospital pleading anonymity alleged if the oxygen plant stops working, they need 18 oxygen cylinders per hour and 432 per day which is impossible as there are only two manufacturing units for oxygen, i.e, in Bari Brahmana and Udhampur which cannot meet such requirement. Sources further claimed that in 1993, around 102 daily wagers were appointed who worked in shifts to look after maintenance of the plant like air conditioner, oxygen plants other things in the hospital. But these daily wagers were shunted out and no new recruitment was followed by the administration of the hospital following which most of the plants started developing snags. |
