After Karra's exit, PDP approaches 2 rich leaders to woo back Srinagar

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Oct 6: Ahead of the Cabinet reshuffle, the ruling PDP is seeking the services of two of its senior leaders to help in restoring law and order in Srinagar.
Sources said in the wake of strained relations with its founding leader Tariq Hameed Karra, who otherwise wields influence in some Srinagar pockets, the PDP leadership was finding it hard to assign the charge of Srinagar affairs to any of the leaders during the ongoing unrest.
Finally the two leaders, who are financially sound, volunteered their services to bring back the summer capital of the state on the "track of normalcy." While one of them happens to be businessman-turned-politician, the other one is a former trade union leader who rags to riches story remains a mystery.
Sources said the duo joined hands only to keep other party leaders at bay, who were trying to grab the opportunity of getting close to the PDP high command ahead of the cabinet reshuffle when new faces are likely to be inducted.
For the past over a fortnight, one of them has been "investing his resources" in volatile downtown Srinagar, whereas the other one is concentrating on civil lines.
Sources said the party high command had asked them to personally visit various areas and interact with people so that the image of the government is improved. "They were asked to improve public outreach at grassroots," the insiders said.
But the duo sublet the work to their "henchmen", who are visiting the target areas to build public support. The duo is understood to be hoping to get ministerial berths.
But the modus operandi of reaching out the target audience has irked some PDP leaders. "They are not at all convincing the people to support the PDP but are trying to literally buy them. As a result nobody beyond turncoat voters, who vote for money are coming forward. And this is something we don't want to happen," said a PDP leader asking not to be named.
He said such an outreach would lead to corruption. "What good can we expect of transparency when we ourselves resort to corrupting the people who will swear alliance to us for monetary gains," said the party leader.
He claimed that PDP was not built out of money but public support. "If money has to be the criteria for efficiency then the more moneyed you are, the bigger politician you will be," the leader added.
He said some of the old guards have decided to pick up the matter with the party high command.
