Authorities impose curfew, restrictions to foil 'Raj Bhavan chalo' call of separatists | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Oct 14: The 'Raj Bhavan chalo' call given by separatists was foiled by authorities as curfew and restrictions were imposed in the Srinagar city as well as some other areas of the Kashmir valley. Curfew was imposed in areas falling under police stations of Nowhatta, Khanyar, Rainawari, Safa Kadal and Maharaj Gunj in old city and Maisuma police station in uptown Srinagar. Curfew was also in place in the Sopore area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district. Elsewhere in Kashmir valley restrictions under section 144 were in force. The authorities imposed curfew and restrictions in order to thwart the 'Raj Bhavan chalo' call given by the separatist leaders. The separatists had asked people to march towards Raj Bhavan as part of their protest programme. They had asked people to offer the congregational Friday prayers on the Boulevard Road leading upto world famous Shalimar garden. All the roads leading towards Raj Bhavan were sealed by police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. The authorities had made extra deployment of security forces personnel especially in downtown Srinagar so as to avoid any protest in the sensitive areas. As compared to the past few Fridays the situation remained by and large normal in Kashmir. Although, reports of protests have come from some areas of Kashmir, but the intensity of protests was very less. Groups of agitated people especially youth took to the streets at some places in Central, South and North Kashmir and carried out protest demonstrations. Protests have been reported from some places in Srinagar, Budgam, Pulwama, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Baramulla and Bandipora districts. A statement issued by Zonal Police Headquarters Kashmir said that barring stray incidents of stone pelting, situation across the valley remained by and large peaceful today. The statement said that adequate deployment was made in the sensitive areas across the valley as a precautionary measure. "Incidents of stone pelting were reported from Sabzi Mandi in Srinagar, Naina Chowk in Anantnag, Khudwani Bypass in Kulgam and Tarzoo, Main Chowk in Sopore. At these places, miscreants in their attempts to disrupt the situation assembled on roads and pelted stones on police and security force deployments," it said. The statement said that greater movement of people and vehicular traffic was observed in Srinagar city as also in other parts of valley. Public transport was also seen on various roads connecting towns and villages, it said adding that Muharram processions were taken out from various places today as well which culminated peacefully. The statement said that in its continuous drive to curb the activities of 'trouble-mongers' police arrested 63 such individuals during past 24 hours involved in disrupting the public order in different parts of the valley. |
