Early Times Report
RAJOURI, Oct 16: The much-awaited construction of Degree College in Sunderbani has hit a roadblock as a BJP MLA wants to shift the campus site to another location only to allegedly favour his party workers.
In 2012-13, the then government had sanctioned construction of a degree college in the Sunderbani tehsil. Subsequently land was identified near Thanda Pani bridge near the town. Officials said while around 50 kanals of state land was available; another 30 kanals were proposed to be procured from the local farmers.
"This site was nearest to city for establishment of the college so that the students don't have to travel long distances for the studies," the locals said. The project estimated to cost around Rs 4.00 Crores was allotted to the JKPCC for execution.
However, in 2014, after the Assembly elections, there was no breakthrough on the project and it remained in oblivion.
Finally after around two years, the ruling PDP-BJP alliance has decided to shift the campus site to Balchama, which is far away from the previous site and will put students to inconvenience.
Officials said the government wants to shift the site, as a local MLA wants to favor his own workers. Officials said the government has identified new site at Balchama, around seven miles away, where some forestland measuring around 40 kanals is available whereas the remaining land will be procured from the locals.
"Basically he (MLA) has assured his workers of Balchama that he will bring business to their area in the form of college," the officials said.
However this is against the interests of the students, who will have to travel more to reach college. "We will have to travel more and change atleast three buses to reach the college. This is illogical. Why the hell does this government want to play with our career?" a delegation of annoyed students asked.
A group of students have already sent a memorandum to the government not to shift the site of the proposed college any farther.
"We had submitted multiple memorandums to the government appealing that the campus is not taken far away that our travel will be cumbersome. But the officials said they were helpless, presumably due to political interference," said a delegation of students led by Sanjiv Kumar, Pawan Kumar, Dipti Sharma, Deepika Sharma and Sanjana Kumari.
The locals have appealed to the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to personally look into the matter.
The locals said they would take to streets and resort to hunger strike should the government fail to meet their demand. "Why is construction of college being politicized?" the locals asked.
Despite repeated attempts the MLA could not be contacted for comments.
