Geelani drops bombshell, Mirwaiz no Hurriyat leader | Kashmir Unrest | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 16: Hurriyat (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani has dropped a bombshell by not acknowledging his Hurriyat (M) counterpart Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as a separatist leader, seemingly to uphold his monopoly in the anti-India camp. Geelani, who is infamous for weakness to be "seen as the sole leader" of the people of Kashmir, has upheld his "one man rule" at a time when Mirwaiz is under detention. Sources said Geelani had written a formal letter to the Mirwaiz seeking his suggestions on the weekly protests calendar as announced by the "united Hurriyat." The letter has been addressed to "Mirwaiz Dr Umar Farooq" with no mention of designation as the Chairman Hurriyat (M). "This means he (Umar) has been addressed as Mirwaiz or to say the priest with no reference to him as the separatist leader," said a Hurriyat (M) leader. Geelani had sent letter to Mirwaiz's Nigeen residence from where his family sent it to the Hurriyat M head office at Ram Bagh. Sources said the letter was seen as insult by the Executive Body of the Hurriyat (M), which held an emergency meeting on October 10 to take note of the issue and to decide future course of action against Geelani. The meeting, which is understood to have been chaired by Prof Abdul Gani Bhat at his Jawahar Nagar office, resolved that there was no need to respond to the "disrespectful letter where Geelani wants to uphold his monopoly over separatist leadership." "How can he miss to acknowledge Mirwaiz Sahib as Hurriyat leader. This is unacceptable and we will not give him any suggestions to carry forward the protest program," the Hurriyat (M) leaders said. This was when the meeting was informed that Geelani never took Hurriyat M into confidence while issuing protest calendar since the day Mirwaiz was arrested on August 25. "Why does he (Geelani) need our suggestions all of a sudden when he has been unilaterally issuing statements. Let's not respond to his letter," the Hurriyat said. This was when some of the Hurriyat (M) leaders dropped another bombshell and accused their own chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq of having kept them in dark over protest program of the united Hurriyat. His party leaders said since the day protests erupted in Kashmir against the killing of terrorist commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani and his two associates on July 8, Mirwaiz never took the Hurriyat (M) Executive Body including Prof Bhat into confidence over anything. "He would take us into confidence only till he forged unity with Geelani and Yasin Malik…Iss Hamam Mein Sabh Nangay," quipped a Hurriyat (M) leader. The separatist leadership believes that apprehending failure of the ongoing protest calendar as it has been losing grip over Kashmir, Geelani wants to take others onboard so that he alone is not blamed for taking the people for a ride. "Now that agitation is losing grip, he wants to take others onboard so that failure doesn't fall on his shoulders alone… This is nothing but a honey trap," said a Hurriyat (M) leader. Sources said Geelani never took separatists other than those belonging to his Hurriyat into confidence over the ongoing agitation. "This has been one man's rule. Till the protests were successfully on, he wanted to be sole leader who needs no suggestions. Now that he is losing hold and has been negotiating with some PDP leaders and their middlemen to reap benefits for his family, he wants to fire the gun from our shoulders. This is ridiculous," said a separatist leader, who doesn't belong to either of the Hurriyats. Despite repeated attempts, Geelani or Prof Bhat could not be contacted for comments. |
