SIC becomes defunct, no order issued for 1 month | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 27: The State Information Commission (SIC) has become defunct as no order under the RTI Act has been issued by it for the past 30 days. Details available with Early Times reveal that SIC used to upload all its orders , notices on the official website at least after every 3 to 4 days, but for the last 30 days, no order has been uploaded. The lone Information Commissioner Nazir Ahmad is retiring within a few days and no one has been shortlisted to replace him. The name of ex-chief secretary Iqbal Khanday has also been making rounds for the post of Chief Information Commissioner (CIC). SIC would be completely be headless after a few days when Nazir retires. G R Sufi, who was the first SIC, retired in March and Information Commissioner S K Sharma retired last year in October.Till now these vacancies have not been filled up by the select committee which consists of CM, leader of opposition and the deputy CM. As SIC continues to be almost defunct, several RTI activists across state have appealed to chief minister Mehbooba Mufti to fill the vacancies without any further delay. Sufi had earlier said that RTI would die its own death if SIC was not constituted as soon as possible. Speaking at a seminar at Central University of Kashmir, he had said that constitution of SIC was very essential for ensuring good governance. Under the provisions of J&K RTI Act 2009, CIC and Information Commissioners can only be appointed by the governor when the selection committee consisting of CM, Leader of Opposition and one cabinet Minister nominated by the CM recommends the suitable candidates. |
