Menace of terrorism

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Oct 29: Ever since July 8, when Hizb terrorist Burhan Wani was liquidated, Kashmir has been in turmoil and Jammu & Kashmir (J & K) Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti doing all that she could to restore peace in the Valley. Of course, she must have been feeling the absence of her father and patron of the PDP, Mufti Mohd Sayeed. He was her greatest strength like she was to him.
The turmoil gripped the Valley in a dramatic manner and suddenly. It brought everything to a standstill. Deadly stone throwers occupied the streets and disgruntled and hired goons took charge of the whole situation. They took the law of the land in their own hand and challenged the very authority of the state. Obviously, the chief minister had never imagined that she would be face to face with such a difficult situation so soon and so suddenly.
In the beginning of the communal unrest when Kashmir witnessed police-unruly crowd lashes, she devoted most of her time and energy to understand what went wrong and who engineered the intifada and who conspired to destabilize her coalition government.
After some time when the situation deteriorated and virtually went out of control and when some children became victims of the violence and received pellet gun injuries, she took on the trouble-makers, who were regulating or exploiting the unrest to further their own sinister agenda. The vested interests and Pakistani agents targeted her for using "heavy force" to crush the agitation and resorting to "excessive use of force". Kashmir press also didn't really cooperate with her, which further added to the difficulties of the administration.
And when things started turning somewhat normal, a sinister campaign was unleashed in the "corridors of power over her credentials as Chief Minister and her astuteness in handling the political crisis at hands". Out on the limb and desperate leaders like Omar Abdullah, working President of the National Conference, accused her of "not handling the affairs of the state" in a responsible manner
So much so, Omar Abdullah blamed her for "total administrative failure" and a state of complete "anarchy" prevailing in the Kashmir valley. He also added that Pakistan might have "incited the fire lit by the Indian government's faulty handling of the situation but the fault primarily lies with the J & K government."
The fact of the matter is that the killing of Burhan Wani changed the whole situation and all the political initiatives and confidence building measures adopted and implemented on ground zero by her government vanished into thin air. Kashmiri Muslims denounced the BJP-PDP alliance government in the state. They also blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government for all the troubles in Kashmir and the so-called Kashmir alienation.
During the past few days, the Chief Minister has openly condemned Pakistan and the trouble-makers in Kashmir. In fact, she took a line which didn't fit in her party's whole approach towards Kashmir and Pakistan. For example, she tore into the separatists ands she also asked Pakistan to behave. "It is for Pakistan to initiate dialogue with India. Indian Prime Minister visited Lahore but Pakistan did Pathankot. We don't want Syria and Afghanistan or Pakistan-like situation in Kashmir," she said not once but on a number of occasions.
All her statements have gone down well with New Delhi and the Prime Minister. Both are at her back and call. Both want her to act and isolate the separatists, terrorists and trouble-makers. She herself has left none in any doubt that she was fed up with the dirty role being played by the vested interests.
There are reasons to believe that both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister are working in tandem and this development augurs well for the state and the country. Her only problem is that there are elements not only in Kashmir and Pakistan but also in Delhi like Kapil Kak, Sushobha Barve, Wajahat Habibullah and Bharat Bhushan, who are all out to upset her calculations. Hence, her task is difficult. One only hopes that she surmounted all the difficulties and come out victorious. However, one thing is clear: Kashmir now will be an altogether a different ball game with Jammu and Ladakh also playing their own role in their own interest.
