PDP for delay, opposition parties bats for scheduled polls | CEO chairs All Party Meet, BJP skips | | Early Times Report Jammu, Nov 16: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Electoral Officer Shantmanu today held an All Party Meeting of various representatives for the byelection for Anantnag Parliamentary Seat which fell vacant after Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was elected as MLA from the constituency after her father Mufti Mohammad Sayeed who represented it, expired in AIIMS on January 7. Governor's Rule was imposed in the state on January 8, which came to an end on April 4 with Mufti taking over as first woman CM of the state and PDP continuing its alliance with BJP. Asserting that there is no representative from Kashmir in Parliament as both Srinagar and Anantnag seats fell vacant, the opposition parties comprising mainstream National Conference, Congress backed by NCP, CPI (M), Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party sought timely completion of election process to fill up the vacant seats. PDP represented the APM as its coalition partner BJP was absent-for reasons better known to them. "On one hand government claims that life is limping back to normalcy and they are holding examinations and curfew is being lifted in the Kashmir valley but simultaneously, they are asking for postponement of elections till April 2017, which is not acceptable as polls have to be held before January 4," Ravinder Sharma, Congress Spokesperson here said. He said that it was surprising that that there was no representative of the BJP, adding, "we also asked the CEO to finalise the dates and exercise to hold Local Bodies elections". "The members of opposition were present in the meeting and in one voice, we sought timely conduct of the polls, which must be held by December 20," Harsh Dev Singh, JKNPP Chairman and former minister said. He said that if there will be any plan of delaying the elections, the Act has to be amended in Parliament for further action. "PDP refused to hold timely polls with a plea that the situation is not favourable," he added and said that BJP remained absent, which was unfortunate. BJP remained tightlipped on its absence from the APM and refused to comment. "We had a detailed meeting with all the representatives of various political parties on holding parliamentary elections of Anantnag seat and everyone wanted it to be held on scheduled time," Shantmanu, Chief Electoral Officer, J&K told . Shantmanu said that the viewpoint of each representative has been noted and will be submitted to the Election Commission of India. "We are preparing a detailed report including the law and order situation in the state and the ground reality will be assessed by the ECI members and they have to take the final call," the CEO added. He asserted that the opposition parties agreed to let ECI team come to the conclusion keeping in view the present scenario of the state for going ahead with the elections. Anantnag Lok Sabha seat fell vacant in July this year and subsequently Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti won from the constituency as MLA while Srinagar fell vacant after senior leader and former minister Tariq Hamid Qarra quit PDP and resigned as MP. |
