Directs officials to launch plantation drive in Autumn | Minister counting stars on a bright sunny day! | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 16: This couldn't get more hilarious than this that amid autumn the Jammu and Kashmir forest minister on Wednesday ordered massive plantation drive in Kashmir Valley, asking the forest officials to make such initiative a success. The officers of the ministry in a fix couldn't tell the minister that Autumn has began in Kashmir a month ago and leaves have already started falling from the trees. "One couldn't understand how would trees be planted this season. Nowhere in world has such a trend been witnessed," says an official. Reports inform that the minister on Wednesday took a trek of around 10 kilometers of Zabarwan Hills and claimed that the Government is committed to develop city forests and focus on tree lining for improving the green cover in the state's summer capital and also promote eco-tourism. The Minister informed the officials accompanying him that the Government would plant over 15 lakh plants in and alongside the city forest conserves area. He also took a review of plantation and other works carried out by the department. He asked officials to begin the further plantation drive soon. He said that Department would undertake massive plantation drive in and alongside famed Zabarwan hills and focus on improving tree lining."But the minister should know that it is Autumn in Kashmir and plantation drive isn't carried in this season. Trees are planted in the spring season and there are six months for that time to arrive," says Maqbool Ahmad Khan, a local resident of old city who was in the area when the minister visited there. Interestingly, the minister during his visit said the Forest Department has been directed to start a massive plantation drive and work on achieving targets. The Minister asked the officials to put in concerted efforts and mobilize the available resources for taking up plantation drive in and alongside Zabarwan hills. The concerned forest minister also asked them to immediately start plantation drive in degraded forest areas of their respective jurisdictions. "Zabarwan hills will be soon get green cover improvement with fresh life," he said. The Minister also urged officials to have a liaison with the public over launching massive plantation drive across the region. He said that public participation is vital for preservation of environment. He was accompanied by Chief Conservator of Forests, Kashmir, Nissar Ahmed Darzi, Conservators, DFOs, Warden, Dachigam National Park, Tahir Shawl, DFO Urban Circle, Hakim Mukhtar Ahmad along with other senior officials of the Forest and its allied wings. "How could plantation drive be started soon? The weather conditions and season of the year should have been taken into account before ordering such a drive. If it is initiated, it will be a draining of state exchequer with no results at all. It is tantamount to finding stars in a sunny day," official told Early Times. |
