Trial Rail run between Srinagar-Budgam conducted | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 16 The railway authorities today conducted trial run between Srinagar and Budgam after repairing the portion damaged due to violence in Kashmir valley since July 9, a day after Hizbul Mujahiden (HM) commander Burhan Wani and two other militants were killed in an encounter in Anantnag. However, it will take more than 10 to 12 days to restore train service between Baramulla in north Kashmir and Banihal in Jammu region. The train service was suspended after the death of Burhan which was followed by violence during which over 90 people and several thousand were injured in security force and police action in the valley. A large portion of track between Baramulla-Srinagar-Qazigund suffered damages in the violence. However, the railway authorities undertook the repair work and today a trial run was conducted between Srinagar and Budgam stations. General Manager Northern Railways A K Putia confirmed that trial run was successful and normal service between the two stations will be resumed from tomorrow. He said it will take 10 to 12 days to restore the railway service between Srinagar-Baramulla in north Kashmir and Srinagar-Banihar in Jammu region via Anantnag and Qazigund. "A number of railway properties were damaged which forced the authorities to suspend train operations in the Valley since July 9. Since there is no train operation, its only source of income-the sale of tickets was also stopped," he said, adding the Railways in Kashmir has been suffering huge revenue loss in operating trains. "We have been spending nearly Rs 80 crore annually on operations and maintenance of rail operations here and in return earn meager income," Mr Putia said. |
