Srinagar, Nov 30: The 434-km long national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with Kashmir valley, was today closed for vehicular traffic for the second time in the last five days due to snowfall, resulting in slippery road conditions.
Hundreds of vehicles, including those carrying passengers, trucks and oil tankers, are stranded on both sides of the highway.
Official sources said the Sonmarg-Zojila-Drass portion of Srinagar-Leh highway, including Zojila and Meenmarg, recorded light to moderate snowfall since early this morning, though the traffic was still through.
No vehicle was allowed from both sides on the highway as a precautionary measure since 1400 hrs due to slippery road conditions, they added.
The Border Roads Origination (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway have pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway, so that stranded vehicles are cleared.
The national highway was closed for a day on November 26 due to slippery road conditions caused by snowfall. The highway remains closed for winter months due to 10 to 15 feet snowfall. |
