National level brainstorming workshop on climate change concludes at SKUAST-J | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 8: Brain storming workshop on climate change and its impact on hill agriculture concluded at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science, Jammu (SKUAST-J) today. Prof Pradeep K Sharma, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu was the chief guest where as Promod Jain (IAS), Financial Commissioner, Agriculture Production Department was the guest of honor. Eminent experts from across the country participated in the brain storming session where in every aspect of climate change was discussed with special emphasis regarding its impact on agriculture and livelihood security. Prof Pradeep K Sharma VC, SKUAST-Jammu in his lead lecture gave an overview of the climate change and global warming viz-a-viz hill agriculture. He advocated that climate change is not a myth but a reality and is happening at a very alarming rate. He said that climate change now has become a potential threat to all forms of life and made a mention of the melting of glaciers and quoted a glaring example of Gangotri and Yamunotri glaciers and further substantiated by narrating the state of level snow cover in Dhaula Dhar range in Himachal Pradesh and Pir Panchal in J&K are melting. Promod Jain (IAS) Financial Commissioner, APD J&K govt sought the expertise from the scientists and experts to come up with the magnitude of the likely impacts of climate change in J&K. He stressed that actionable policy transformation is required to tackle the problem of climate change. Jain emphasised participatory approach is probably the best way to arrive at result orientated resort in implementation and execution of various schemes and programmes to subside the deleterious effects of climate change and global warming. |
