Sub-standard pesticides continue to flow into State | Horticulture industry under threat | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 11: The sub-standard pesticides continue to flow into Jammu and Kashmir and government seems least bothered to take necessary measures in this regard. In 2015, government said that it will move a bill in the Assembly to enact a law that will book people involved in the sale of substandard pesticides under PSA. However, three years down the line, nothing has been done so far while the sub-standard pesticides continue to seep into the state. "In the absence of pesticides regulatory board as proposed by the government and testing of pesticides and fertilizers in hi-tech laboratories, such fertilizers are allowed to be sold in the market," an official of the Horticulture Department said. Sources said hundreds of bags of misbranded pesticides were recovered from dealers over the years. Officials said the Horticulture Department was conducting raids at different areas to check the sale of misbranded pesticides besides informing the growers through various mediums. "Still we have failed to curb the sale of substandard pesticides," he said. He said the enforcement wing of the Horticulture Department has been strengthened and vested with more powers to control and check the sale and purchase of spurious pesticides, fungicides and fertilizers. Fruit growers said their crops always remain under threat from spurious pesticides. "Government has taken no measures to curb on spurious pesticides. The fruit growers have always been demanding to bring the strict laws to curb on spurious pesticides, which has destroyed the horticulture sector of the state," Mohammad Ashraf, a fruit grower of Shopian said. He said there has been decline in the horticulture production of the state due to spraying of spurious pesticides in the orchards. Sources said a group of people having strong political affiliations are supplying sub-standard pesticides and fertilizers to the state. Orchardists said that Rs 5,000 cr apple industry of Kashmir was under threat from spurious pesticides and fertilizers and if proper measures were not taken immediately, the industry would be hit badly. "If immediate measures are not taken then this industry, which is considered backbone of state's economy will vanish," said a fruit grower Ali Mohammad. |
