Despite Governor's keenness PDP-BJP Govt continues to delay holding of Panchayat elections | People of Jammu, Ladakh bullied for no fault of theirs | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 11: Governor Narendra Nath Vohra's keenness to hold the Panchayat elections in the state has gone 'down the drain' since the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) government in Jammu & Kashmir is paying no attention whatsoever to the same. In the recent past the governor had many times impressed upon the coalition government to hold Panchayat elections in the state at the earliest. The 'pressure' tactics failed to yield any result with elections for Panchayats not being held. Over the past couple of years the Panchayats have turned defunct due to non-holding of elections. It was after a gap of 33 years that elections to the Panchayats of Jammu & Kashmir were held in 2011. As the five year tenure of Panchayats ended in 2016 one was expecting that elections would be held soon. The summer turmoil in Kashmir in 2016 ensured that the process would be stalled in the valley and the repercussions were noticed in Jammu and Ladakh as well. Despite the fact that the situation is conducive for holding elections in Jammu and Ladakh regions the PDP-BJP government failed to do the same. The government is offering the excuse that since the situation is not ripe in Kashmir for holding the elections in Kashmir it cannot hold elections in the other two regions of the state as well. In the present day context the BJP is playing second fiddle to PDP when it comes to governing the state. The saffron party has up to this moment of time failed to convince its coalition partner vis-à-vis holding of Panchayat elections in the state. The BJP has lost this round of governance to PDP and still then the party leaders are making tall claims about their success. It would be in place to mention here that Governor carried out many meetings with chief minister Mehbooba Mufti with regards to holding of Panchayat elections. The holding of elections seems to be a distant reality as on date with nobody ready to bell the cat. The coalition partners are taking the refuge under the Kashmir situation. The chief minister had some months back tweeted that the Panchayat elections would be held from February 15. Later on she never deemed it fit to inform the people about the latest in this regard. The people of state more so those belonging to Jammu and Ladakh regions have been bullied by the state government with regards to holding of Panchayat elections. The BJP ministers in the state government seemed to have lost their way and they have virtually surrendered on this issue to PDP. The meek surrender of the party leaders with respect to Panchayat elections is all set to upset their future plans and programmes. The people of Jammu and Ladakh regions are upset with BJP ministers and legislators since they have failed to come up to their expectations. The All Jammu & Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) had recently asked the political parties to stay away from Panchayat elections. The conference had said that Panchayats are apolitical institutions and politicians should not poke their nose in the functioning of the same. |
