Mendhar stream on verge of extinction as RDD dumps garbage into water body

Early Times Report

MENDHAR, Mar 11: Instead of disposing garbage and other waste material at a dumping ground, the Rural Development Department (RDD) authorities here are directly throwing refuse into a nullah (stream) in Mendhar.
Residents complained that by doing so they are not only polluting the Mendhar stream which ultimately will lead to the death of aquatic species but is also a source of nuisance for the people
The RDD authorities after collecting garbage from various parts of the town directly throw it into the nullah near Bus Stand.
Besides, the RDD lacks proper mechanism to dispose refuse due to which the garbage is dumped in open dumping sites leading to air pollution, contamination of soil and ground water.
"These open landfill sites produce toxic chemicals," said Advocate Nadeem Khan, chairman Mendhar Youth Club.
"They are polluting the Mendhar stream, which will ultimately lead to loss of aquatic life in it. It is also causing problems to people who pass through the area, as foul smell emanates from the stream. Due to the negligence of the municipal authorities, the flora and fauna in the stream had been badly affected," he added. "We have made complaints to the authorities many times, but to no avail. Now, we have given up complaining," Vikas Sharma, a local resident, said.
To top it all, the RDD also failed to do its job in a professional manner as the garbage that was meant to be picked up is not being properly collected due to which the drains get blocked while the trash thrown outside the bins got washed away into the streets.
While the authorities provided only a few dumpsters for the collection of garbage as most of them have been dumped in stores of the civic body thereby exposing the claims of the civic body of not having dumpsters for the collection of garbage. As a result, people have been forced to dump garbage on roadsides including at Dharna Chowk, Main Chowk, New Bus Stand and Old Bus Stand. With very few dumpsters available heaps of garbage remain piled up on the roadside leading to cluttered roads and clogged drains.
