Local Lashkar militant killed during encounter at Arizal-Beerwah Budgam | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Mar 25: A local militant owing allegiance to banned militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) was killed in an encounter with police and security forces at Arizal in Central Kashmir's Budgam district in the wee hours today. A teenage girl was also injured in the firing incident. Reports said that after receiving inputs about the presence of some militants' police and security forces cordoned off the Arizal village falling in the Beerwah area in the central Kashmir's Budgam late last night. As one of the houses was zeroed a militant hiding fired upon the joint party of police and security forces. The firing by the militant led to a full-fledged encounter in the village with bullets being fired from both the sides. The militant tried to break free the cordon but could not so since he came under heavy firing from the security forces. He was killed in the shoot-out after offering some resistance. The slain militant belonging to LeT was identified as Shafat Ahmad Wani resident of Wagoora-Kreeri in North Kashmir's Baramulla district. A 17 years old girl was also injured in the firing incident. She has been identified as Humaira daughter of Mohammad Maqbool Khan, resident of Arizal-Beerwah. Her condition is stated to be stable in the hospital. Following the encounter authorities blocked the mobile internet services in parts of Budgam and Baramulla districts. Officials said that internet was snapped as part of measures to keep a check on rumors in view of the encounter that broke out at Arizal. The ban was on when last reports came in. Police said that a militant was killed and a teenage girl sustained bullet wounds in a pre-dawn brief encounter. Today on specific input regarding presence of militants Budgam police, 53 RR and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation in Khan Mohalla, Arizal jurisdiction of Police station Beerwah. "During search, militants tried to flee and came out of house and fired indiscriminately on security forces. In retaliation one militant was neutralized. He has been identified as Shafat Hussain Wani son of Mohammad Akbar Wani resident of Wagoora-Baramulla. He was affiliated with the outlawed militant organization LeT since April 2017," said a police spokesman. The police spokesman said that at the encounter site incriminating materials including but not limited to arms & ammunition, mobile phones, cash worth Rs 30000 have been recovered. No collateral damage has occurred during operation. Legal proceedings have been initiated by police and investigation taken up, he said. "In the incident one lady received injury in thigh while the hiding militant was trying to escape while firing indiscriminately. She has been promptly evacuated to hospital by the police for medical treatment and her condition is now reported to be stable. The area is under cordon and search is being done," said the police spokesman. |
