Reasi, Mar 28: The much-hyped Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make India clean by October 2, 2019 suffered a serious setback in Reasi, as even after being issued an Open Defecation-Free (ODF) certificate by the administration, nearly 50 percent of the area still stinks.
In September last year, after completing the formalities, a top official had issued an ODF certificate for Pouni while announcing that whole block has been covered in the progamme and SBM for Pouni stands accomplished.
Just a year later, the block has received complaints from various areas, with the people alleging that the heaps of garbage and litter is spread everywhere inviting foul stink and diseases.
"Nearly 50 percent areas' applications have been forwarded to the Block Development officer about the open defecation and other issues related to sanitation in the block," said Hari Ram, a resident of Pouni.
The BDO also admitted to the Early Times that he had received a large number of applications from various parts of the block in which request for constructing toilets, installation of dustbins and other requirements have been sought by the people.
Locals alleged that the officials had prepared a false report of the block as government of India under SBM had demanded 'clearance certificate' from all districts of the state by October 2, 2019assuring that India goes totally clean.
"We do not know what were intentions of the officials but the ground situation is that still half of block Pouni is stinking and needs a big sanitation drive," said another local Tirath Dass.
Meanwhile, the social society in Pouni block of district Reasi has appealed the Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to take the cognizance of 'fraud' committed by the officials in the name of SBM. |
