9,000 schools in State sans LPG for cooking MDM | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 30: The claims of the government that the mid-day meal (MDM) scheme is being successfully implemented in schools appear frivolous, as nearly 9,000 schools do not have LPG connections for cooking. In the meeting of Steering-cum-Monitoring Committee (SCMC), which was held under the leadership of its then chairman (Chief Secretary), both the Directorate of Jammu and Kashmir were asked to coordinate with oil companies directly so that LPG connections are to be provided by or before 30 April 2017 on domestic rates. "But even after a year, the leftover schools are still using firewood for preparing mid-day meal," sources said. They said that due to non-availability of LPG connections in these schools, the cooks-cum-helpers are facing difficulties for preparing food especially in peak summer and rainy season. Sources said of nearly 23210 schools in the state where MDM is being served to pupil, 9,000 schools are still having no LPG connections. With the result these schools are compelled to prepare food using firewood or smokeless chullahs (stoves). It is pertinent to mention here that despite instruction from higher up to distribute connection to leftover schools on domestic rates with coordination of the Consumer Affair and Public Distribution Department as soon as possible, the officials at the helm seem least bothered about it. "Out of 23210 schools where mid day meal is being provided to children, more than 5000 schools of Jammu division and 3000 of Kashmir division are without LPG connection. Around 14,000 schools have LPG connections of which 8000 are in Kashmir division", sources added. |
