With Move offices all set to open, authorities wake up to traffic congestion in Srinagar | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 3: It seems the divisional administration of Kashmir has woken up from slumber since it has issued some directions with regard to smooth movement of traffic in the summer capital of the state. The directions have been issued just few days before the opening of Durbar Move offices at Srinagar. The Durbar Move offices are going to start its functioning at Srinagar from May 7. In addition to this the main wing of High Court, Raj Bhawan and Police Headquarters would also start its functioning from Srinagar on the same date. Divisional Commiss-ioner Kashmir, Baseer Khan issued an order today with regard to streamlining of traffic in the Srinagar city. The Divisional Commissioner has by virtue of the order put onus on Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) vis-à-vis smooth movement of traffic in the Srinagar city. "District Magistrate Srinagar will deploy two Executive Magistrates meant for SMC traffic de-congestion exclusively for Srinagar Municipal Corporation issues; who shall be deputed with Inspector General of Police, Traffic, J&K," reads the order number 09 DIV.COM-K of 2018 dated 03-05-2018. The order further reads, "Commissioner Srinagar Municipal Corporation will depute 25 dedicated officers/officials with Inspector General of Police, Traffic exclusively meant for SMC demolition issues & traffic decongestion within SMC limits. Srinagar Municipal Corporation to deploy two JCBs exclusively meant for issues related to Srinagar Municipal Corporation & traffic decongestion." Given the fact that SMC has over the years failed to streamline the overall movement of people in the Srinagar city it remains to be seen how would the officials of Corporation respond to the latest directives issued by no less than Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir? "There are many places in the heart of summer capital where the roadside vendors and petty traders have set up their kiosks and carts while selling merchandise of varying variety. The SMC officials have over the years failed to shift these people to some other people and this is despite the directions of High Court," said sources while sharing their views with Early Times. The High Court has on many occasions pulled up the SMC higher ups for their failure to take action in making the movement of people hassle free. The High Court directions were virtually relegated to the backburner by the SMC authorities and as such the people continue to face problems in moving around in the summer capital of the state, said sources. "Many of the roadside vendors have been allotted shops at some places in the Srinagar district but still then they are operating their kiosks in the heart of the summer capital. These people grease the palms of SMC officials and as such the common masses continue to suffer for no fault of theirs," said sources. |
