Jammu obeys law, Srinagar shouts 'Musa Musa, Zakir Musa' | Anti-encroachment drive | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 3: Even as the Traffic Police has intensified its drive to remove encroachments from roads in the winter capital of Jammu, and rightly so, the authorities in Srinagar have surrendered before miscreants who shout pro-azadi and pro-Pakistan slogans. On May 2, on the request of Traffic Police, the anti-encroachment squads of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and other concerned departments attempted to remove encroachments from the busy Hari Singh High Street and adjoining areas. The High Court has already directed the state to remove such impediments from the area. But even before the encroachment drive would commence, the miscreants started pelting stones amid sloganeering like "Musa Musa, Zakir Musa" and "We Want Freedom." Witnesses said within minutes of the incident, the anti-encroachment squads fled the spot. The central business district of Srinagar between Dalgate and Batamaloo as also towards adjoining Hazuri Bagh have been facing numerous encroachments, including pavement vending which hinders smooth flow of traffic. The busy-routes are also the key link to the Civil Secretariat which will reopen in the coming week. Despite the dire need to remove the encroachments, the government has yet again succumbed to the pressures of the miscreants. It's for the second time in the last two months that drive to remove encroachments had to be abandoned in the area. The last time SMC Commissioner Reyaz Ahmed was attacked by the miscreants. Sources said the pavement vendors in Srinagar enjoy political patronage of ruling politicians who safeguard their interests for vote bank politics. "How is it possible that miscreants who resort to anti-India sloganeering will be given free hand unless they enjoy patronage of ruling politicians," said a senior official in the administration on the condition of anonymity. The traders of Jammu, who are all praise for the Traffic Police for regulating traffic on busy streets, have been keenly monitoring the "pampering of the miscreants" who not only hinder smooth flow of traffic but also resort to anti-India activities in Srinagar. When contacted a senior official in the administration said the matter was being looked into. "Actually we want to avoid any law and order situation and thus have been giving them (miscreants) time because we don't want to provoke them," the official said. |
