Early Times Report

Jammu, May 3: The department of Urban Local Bodies has been assigned with the job of redressing public issues, but it has failed to establish even a public grievance cell, reflecting its non-serious attitude.
The people residing in urban areas of the state have to approach the department for various issues. But due to negligent attitude of the department, people have lot of a complaints against it. However, in absence of any grievance cell for redressal of public issues, the people have been left to fend for themselves.
"The ULBs are vested with the responsibility of providing services to the general public which inter alia include public health, sanitation, conservancy services, solid waste management, maintenance of sewerage/ drainage network system, lighting of streets and lanes, registration of death and birth, regulation of slaughter houses, maintenance of bus stops, making availability of parking lots and public convenience, issuance of building permissions besides taking sufficient measures for ensuring planned execution of construction works within its periphery," sources said.
They said that in order to ensure that all its designated duties are attended to in a systematic manner and that all the genuine demands/ grievances of the local public are taken care of in a shortest possible time, it was mandatory to establish public grievance cell by ULBs for receiving grievances and complaints from the general public and monitoring its redressal thereof. "Shockingly, there is no such cell in any of the ULBs in the state, as a result there was no mechanism to monitor the redressal of grievances of the local public with regard to various public services," the sources added.
