BARAMULLA (Uri), June 3: Fire broke out in a receiving station at National Hydro Electric Power Corporation (NHPC) Boniyar on Sunday in which two transformers belonging to NHPC and PDD got damaged and with the result around 30 villages got affected in Boniyar thesil of this north Kashmir district.
Eyewitness informed to early times that at around 10:30 am on Sunday fire broke out inside the NHPC receiving station and later engulfed adjoining huts. Whereas the estimated loss is worth of Rs 2 crores.
Soon after the fire, local volunteers living in the area reached the spot and tried to douse off the flames, while as a hut adjacent to the receiving station also got damaged, said eyewitness.
Local resident of Boinyar thesil alleged that, there was a criminal negligence of the department as they had not made a concrete basement under the transformers instead of that they had made wooden bed to support these transformers.
The fire broke out at 10:30 am only but unfortunately till 1:15 pm no official of the department was present on the spot to access the situation, locals alleged.
They further said that there is no availability of fire tenders in Boniyar or Uri thesil, of this north Kashmir district, and to douse the flames, fire tenders were called in from Baramulla and till they reached to the spot, locals had got control over the fire.
However sources said that transformers having capacity of 4MVA and 6.3 MVA were damaged in the fire which has lead to electricity breakdown in the area.
It is believed that electricity in more than 30 villages of Boniyar Tehsil has got affected due to the range in 4MVA transformer that belongs to PDD. While as almost 350 villages in Boniyar and Uri thesils are without fire tenders, locals told ET.
Meanwhile a senior police official who was on the spot said that, the cause of the fire was not known immediately and a case has been registered into the incident to ascertain the cause of the fire.
Thankfully the fire tenders were immediately pressed to douse off the fire. While as the flames have been almost controlled with the efforts of locals, police and team of fire tenders, the official added.
