Ceasefire has boomeranged | Time to review | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, June 3: By endorsing the controversial demand of Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti to announce ceasefire during the month of Ramzan, the Narendra Modi Government took a calculated risk of closely watching the ground situation for some time and determine which way the wind is blowing on ground zero in Jammu & Kashmir in general and Kashmir Valley, the real trouble-spot, in particular. Now after waiting for first 17 days of Ramzan, the army authorities have, according to reports, concluded that "the situation is gradually going from bad to worse". Reports suggest that "in this small period of ceasefire, the terrorist organisations have carried out more lethal strikes targeting jawans of the Indian army". Besides, in the process, they also "exhibited the range of their striking capacity and innovative methods adopted before targeting jawans of the security forces". As per the recent assessment of security forces, "the jawans of the Indian army continue to remain at the receiving end of the propaganda machinery used by vested interests to denigrate their presence in the region". "If nature of incidents reported across Kashmir valley are any indication, then it can be said with full confidence that the security forces are in for more troubled situation ahead in the run-up to the annual Amarnath pilgrimage," reports suggest. Already incidents of weapon snatching, IED blast, ambush of soldiers, attack on convoy vehicles have been reported in parts of Kashmir in the last 17 days. There was also no let up from the Pakistani side to infiltrate heavily armed militants inside the Indian Territory. Even on June 1, there were reports that at least 20 terrorists belong to Jaish-e-Mohammad had entered Jammu & Kashmir. And what happened in Kashmir on June 1 and 2 was an indication that terrorists have upset the Union Government's applecart. These two days witnessed at least 9 terror attacks on security forces leading to injuries to an equal number of CRPF personnel. The situation along the line of control and the International border is also far from normal. In the latest incident of a strike on army jawans, a CASPER vehicle came under attack by the militants on May 28 in Zainapora area of Shopian district, Kashmir. Three soldiers, including an officer, were injured while the bulletproof vehicle was severely damaged in the blast. An IED was used to trigger a powerful blast in the middle of the road. It happened after almost a decade. The incident clearly indicated that if the government would not agree to their terms and conditions of extending the ceasefire agreement similar strikes would be launched. In addition, the manner in which fresh incidents of targeting informers and killing them in cold-blood in front of their loved ones have come to light it only indicates the hardcore training these militant cadres have undergone before joining the ranks of terrorist outfits. |
