Early Times Report
Anantnag, June 3, 2018: Jammu and Kashmir Government's decision to set-up a Degree College in Pahalgam Constituency of South Kashmir's Anantnag district has brought the residents of dozens of villages at loggerheads.
While the residents of Aishmuqam and nearby villages want Higher Education Department to open the college in Aishmuqam others demand that it should be established in Sligam area of constituency and therefore the battle for the Degree College has intensified.
On Thursday, residents of Akad-Sligam held a protest demonstration and demanded that the college be established in Sligam village of Pahalgam constituency for which they claimed to have donated over 80 kanals of land to the Higher Education Department.
"Sligam is heart of the constituency in terms of road connectivity. 87 villages have voluntarily given their consent for establishing the college here," protesters said.
They said that a technical team constituted by the government has also given its report in favor of establishing college in Sligam.
In Aishmuqam, hundreds of residents lead by Peoples Democratic Party Youth Leader Sofi Aarfat held protests after Friday prayers to press the demand for college.
Protesters were carrying placards 'We demand college and we deserve college' marched in the town and asked government to reconstitute the technical team for surveying the locations suggested for establishing the college.
"We met Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in the month of February at Jammu and requested her to reconstitute the technical team for surveying the area. She agreed but till time it didn't happen" PDP Youth leader Sofi Aarfat told Early Times.
"Chief Minister in presence of Rafi Ahmad Mir has agreed to reconstitute the technical team we hope the promise is fulfilled," he added.
Protesters said that the town is connecting to every hook and corner of the constituency particularly with Hapthnard-Khayar belt having SC and ST population.
MLA Pahalgam, Altaf Ahmad Wani (Kulo) on being contacted expressed anguish against the Higher Education Department for ignoring him.
