BJP wave ebbing in India | | | The BJP led NDA is in trouble. After the recent opposition unity shattered the dream of the BJP to regain power in Karnataka the the results to the 14 constituencies, where the by-poll was held, is an added dampner to the BJP because out of 14 it lost 11 seats. Though the only satisfaction the ruling BJP has that it continues to have majority in the Lok Sabha. And the initial defeat in Karnataka and now its defeat in the 11 of the 14 Lok Sabha seats, in the bypoll, is a major worry for the party and its President,Amit Shah. Gradually the Modi wave seems to ebb not because of its failure in streamlining its foreign policy or as a result of fiscal problems but the way regional parties have come under the umbrella of the Congress is a potential challenge for the BJP. And if the Congress succeeds in bringing all the regional parties under its umbrella the BJP may not be able to retain power after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The Assembly elections in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh is the round the corner and the efficacy of Modi wave will be on test in these two BJP ruled states. And if the BJP loses both Rajasthan and MP it would be a major disaster for the BJP. Opposition unity got a booster dose on as the BJP faced stunning defeats in 11 of the 14 byelections for which results were announced and regional forces emerged on top of electoral charts, signalling a new phase in Indian politics. The ruling BJP faced a crushing defeat in Uttar Pradesh Kairana parliamentary segment where Tabassum Hasan, the joint nominee of Rashtriya Lok Dal and Samajwadi Party; backed by Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress defeated Mriganka Singh of the saffron fold by around 50,000 votes. BJP's loss in the communally sensitive Kairana stood out considering it had won the segment by over two lakh votes in the 2014 General Election when the Narendra Modi wave swept UP Of the four Lok Sabha seats where bypolls were held on May 28, the BJP managed to retain only Palghar in Maharashtra, where it defeated a Shiv Sena candidate. Kairana went to the kitty of a united Opposition; Congress UPA partner NCP snatched Bhandara-Gondia in Maharashtra from the BJP and the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, a BJP ally in the North-East, bagged the Nagaland segment. The opposition parties under the umbrella of the Congress had anot her satisfaction that its candidates did not win by a small margin which is also a worry for the BJP. By all indications the BJP is on a slippery ground and it may be late for the BJP to improve its performance. It seems that antiincumbency factors seems to play its role in the states where the Lok Sabha bypoll was held. And the BJP has still time to rectify its image and woo voters from all segments, especially the Dalits and the muslims. It has been seen where the BJP candidates lost the bypolls it was the outcome of opposition from the Dalits and the muslim voters. Both Modi and Amit Shah need to check this drift among the Dalits and muslim voters. |
