Civilians anguished over Pakistan's ceasefire violation
6/3/2018 11:00:40 PM
Early Times Report

Jammu, June 3: Days after Pakistan assured India that it will follow the 2003 ceasefire agreement in "letter and spirit", Islamabad has betrayed India again. The Pakistani Rangers once again violated the ceasefire and targeted BSF posts and the civilian areas at the international border in Akhnoor sector of Jammu region. The Pakistani Rangers resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate firing and shelling on the civilian areas and BSF posts since 1.15 am. While speaking SP Jammu Rural Shivdeep Singh said, "Pakistan targeted our civilian areas since early morning. One policeman is also among the injured." All the villages within 5 km range from the international border were bombarded with mortar shells by Pakistani Rangers.
"Pakistani forces have been firing mortars on our houses since morning. We want our government to give tit-for-tat response to Pakistan's provocations. We can't tolerate this anymore," said one of the angry villagers near the international border. Even the villages which witnessed no shelling in last 15-20 years too were targeted by Pakistani Rangers on Sunday. "Pakistani shelling on our village came as a surprise to us. We didn't face it for a long time. But now we are scared and want government to shift us to safer areas," said another villager. The locals showed the news channel crew remains of Pakistani mortar shells that exploded in the area. The Pakistani shelling also caused heavy damage to the houses in the border villages. Splinter marks could be seen on the walls of houses in the border areas. Many civilians living in the border villages staged anti-Pakistan protests and appealed to the Modi government to take strong action against Pakistan. "If Pakistan fires one shell, we must fire 100 shells. The government must puruse a very strong policy against Pakistan," said an angry border resident while raising anti-Pakistan slogans.
Meanwhile, the police and civil administration evacuated hundreds of people living near the international border in Akhnoor sector. "We have rescued all those who were stranded. They have been shifted to relief camps. Those who want to be moved to safer areas can contact us," said Shivdeep Singh, SP Jammu Rural while touring the border villages. BJP MLA from Marh constituency Sukhnandan Chaudhary also visited the border areas to take stock of the situation. "We are providing all kind of facilities to people living in relief camps," said the BJP legislator.
