But where was the ceasefire?
6/19/2018 11:23:55 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Jun 19: The Narendra Modi Government's decision of a unilateral ceasefire in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) was met with increased violence even as forces were asked to suspend security operations in the state.
The month-long (May 17-June 17) ceasefire saw a record 20 grenade attacks, 50 terrorist strikes and a total of 41 deaths even as forces were asked to show restraint, a report from Delhi said.
Last year too, the Ramzan period had witnessed 43 deaths ,while 32 deaths were recorded in 2016.
However, this year, following Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's request, the Home Ministry had decided to go for a unilateral ceasefire hoping that terror outfits would respond in kind. That however, hasn't proved to be the case.
Following the actions by the terrorists, the Centre on June 17 decided to withdraw the ceasefire and security forces were asked to resume all operations against the terrorists.
24 of the dead were terrorists belonging to outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Hizbul Mujahideen, Al Badr among others, while nine security personnel were martyred during the period.
Meanwhile, across the border, Pakistani forces continued their unprovoked attacks even as the Indian Army had sent out a message of peace during Ramzan.
It is absolutely clear that no proper homework was done by the powers-that-be before announcing unilateral ceasefire. It's no wonder then that terror outfits and their mentors in Pakistan made optimum use of the opportunity offered by the Union Government and strike at will at security forces and civilians.
It is a different matter that former CM Mehbooba Mufti continued to bat for extension of ceasefire for at least two more months. It was a height of irresponsibility. She should have instead demanded revocation of cease fire immediately after its announcement following spurt in terrorist-related activities and attacks on the security forces, especially the CRPF. But she thought otherwise. But this time the BJP didn't walk into the PDP's trap. Besides, security forces and their inputs on the ground situation in Kashmir, national sentiment and fast growing unpopularity of the BJP and its defeats in by-polls, including in Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Ladakh, and poor performance in the Gujarat and Karnataka assembly elections all changed the whole attitude of the Narendra Modi Government and the resultant withdrawal of the support to Mehbooba Mufti government and collapse of her government.
The people have welcomed the exit of Mehbooba Mufti Government with the BJP finally telling the nation that it withdrew support to the Mufti Government in the "national interest".
