SKUAST (K) sans germ plasm bank, research activities overlooked
7/2/2018 10:49:19 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 2: In order to preserve seeds or tissues of animals or plants and conduct research, the agriculture universities have to maintain a germ plasm bank, but SKUAST (Kashmir) has overlooked this necessary aspect and failed to maintain a germ plasm bank till date.
Sources told Early Times that germ plasm is the living genetic resources such as seeds or tissue that are preserved for animal or plant breeding and for conducting research and for that an inventory of seed/plant varieties, vegetable hybrids and medicinal plants along with bio-diversity details and germ plasm bank was required to be maintained by the university.
Astonishingly, there was no inventory, bio-diversity details, germ plasm bank maintained by the university. Although SKUAST (K) claimed that an inventory of seed plant varieties, vegetable hybrids and medicinal plants along with bio-diversity details and germ plasm bank had been maintained by respective divisions and that database as per national/international standards were to be developed by the Directorate of Research. But the fact of the matter is that no progress has been made in this connection to maintain inventory, sources maintained.
They further said that the Faculty of Forestry had collected germ plasm of 50 forestry tree/ shrub species from different parts of the Valley which could not be preserved and Division of Vegetable Sciences also failed to carry out the conservation of the indigenous/ local vegetables.
Pertinently, the private germ plasm banks are to be maintained a temperature of -20 degrees Celsius to keep germ plasm safe and the bank can protect the seed up to 40 years. In the absence of professionally run germ plasm banks, most of the seed firms are storing the seed in not so scientific methods. There is need to work to conserve germ plasm as it is important to make it available for farmers too in order to ensure food and nutritional security in the country.
