Separate functions mark Dogra's anniversary | Cong leaders show how divided party is in Kathua | | Harpreet Singh Sethi Early Times Story
Kathua, July 17: The internal strife in Kathua district unit of Congress came to the fore once again on Tuesday when two separate functions were held by the party leaders to pay tributes to veteran party leader late Girdhari Lal Dogra on his 103th birth anniversary. Dr Manohar Lal Sharma and MLC Thakur Balbir Singh presided over separate functions to pay tributes to late Dogra. The group headed by Dr Sharma is being supported by District Congress Committee President and ex-MLC Subhash Gupta and Naresh Sharma. The opponent group headed by Thakur Balbir Singh enjoys the support by former MLA Girdhari Lal Chalotra and Working President Pankaj Dogra. The infighting in the Congress not only surprised the people who had turned up on the occasion but it raised questions on the preparation of the party for next year's parliamentary polls. Even as the Congress leadership in the state and the Centre was trying everything to end the culture of groupism within the oldest political party in the country, observers are keenly watching the developments in the Kathua unit of the party which had lost ground to its rival BJP in the last assembly elections. The observers are of the opinion that the unity of Congress leaders will decide the future of the party in the district if it wants to regain its hold. Important to mention here, state Congress vice-president Sham Lal Sharma also resigned from his post in the aftermath of the rape and murder of an eight year-old nomadic girl in the district in January this year. |
