Crackdown on Pak-sponsored unrest in J&K: Govt orders shut down of 30 Pakistani, Islamic channels in Valley | | | Srinagar: In a crackdown on Pakistan-sponsored unrest in Jammu and Kashmir, the government has reportedly ordered cable operators in the Valley to shut down more than 30 Pakistani and Islamic channels. The directive by the Home Department has branded these channels as banned and has stated that these channels pose a threat to peace and tranquillity. The channels that have come under the government’s radar include the Pakistani and Islamic channels that currently operate mainly from Pakistan and the Gulf countries. Meanwhile, reports suggested that the cable operators were expected to meet today to discuss the development and formulate a future strategy regarding the same. The cable operators have reportedly expressed apprehensions that taking these channels off air could cause massive losses to them as they have huge viewership in the Valley. Reports said that a few people had already complained about the new directive by the government and had surrendered their cable connections in protest. Last year in May, the Jammu and Kashmir government had ordered all the District Magistrates to make sure that all Pakistani and Saudi Arabian channels being telecast in the Valley were stopped. At the time, the directive issued by the state Home department had said that these channels had the potential to “incite violence” and “create law and order” situation. |
