KUPWARA, July 22: Day after army foiled infiltration bid in Tangdar sector, firing incident was reported amid a cordon-and-search operation in Shumriyal forest area of Lolab in Kupwars district on Sunday, a police official said.
He said that today morning some gunshots were heard in the forest area when the army's 28 RR search party was moving through the forest area.
As the army party was moving on in the area, they were fired upon by a group of militants in the forests, after which a brief exchange of gunfire took place in the area, the police official said.
The police official said that a day before on July 21, army foiled an infiltration bid in Tangdar area, there was specific information and the search party was on in the forest areas on routine basis, after which the entire area was cordoned off and searches operation was carried out to trace out the militants.
An additional reinforcement of army and para commandos was called in to counter the militants, adding the counter insurgency operation against the militants is on in the area, as from past few days we have information about the presence of infiltrators in forest areas near the Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara, the official told ET.
However sources said that security forces launched CASO in Lolab Valley of Kupwara district after militants fired upon search party.
On Sunday morning militants opened fire upon a patrol of army's 28 RR in Khumrial forest area of Lolab Kupwara, sources told early times.
Sources believe that militants have flee from the area as the area is highly dense, adding the army and police have started a combing operation against the militants in the dense woods of Lolab, sources informed.
