Illegal clinics, nursing homes go unchecked in Kashmir | | | S Tahir-ul Haq
Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, July 29: The government has allegedly given a freehand to the people running illegal clinics, chemist shops and nursing homes across the Kashmir Valley. "We know that India is the fourth largest producer of pharmaceuticals globally, poised to become the pharmacy of the world. Because of its vibrant pharmaceutical manufacturing industry, the country is susceptible to diversion of narcotic and psychotropic pharmaceuticals produced by its industry", said a top doctor in SKIMS, Srinagar. However, he said, there are some common illicitly-used pharmaceuticals like codeine based cough syrups and other narcotic painkillers as well as a variety of benzodiazepine tablets which are widely available through retail pharmacies. With the result they give birth to drug peddling in the state. When asked if there is any negative impact of it on the young generation and society in general, the doctor said that it is a matter of great concern "for all of us that illicit pharmaceutical drug use has surpassed the use of illicit drugs in many parts of India and Kashmir as well." "One has to understand that there are complex problems with a multitude of causal and confounding factors, this situation demands a multi-faceted and highly sensitive approach towards tackling it," the doctor added. Meanwhile, sources told Early Times that if "we want to improve the quality of health care system in Kashmir, no chemist should sell a single tablet without a proper prescription of a doctor." "Unregistered clinics, nursing homes go unchecked in Kashmir valley and the chemists know everything about the substandard medicines and fake doctors," sources informed. It is they who promote the business because they earn a huge profit from it and fact of the matter is that many chemists provide substitutes of the medicine which they actually get from the companies on commission basis and they earn a huge profit on it without consideration of the condition of the patient, said sources. They said that the illicit poly-drug use is considered another major problem and that poses extra challenges for the rehabilitation process. "Unfortunately, government has given the relaxation to the unregistered clinics and drug controllers are in a deep slumber. Need of the hour is to put a blanket ban of selling of medicine without prescription," sources mentioned. |
