Now CUS decision to hold exams after gunfight triggers chaos | Students protest; Complaint reaches Raj Bhawan | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Oct 24: With no let up in complaints of alleged maladministration at the Cluster University Srinagar, in the latest, the CUS on Wednesday heightened tensions by not going ahead with closure of its colleges in the wake of a deadly encounter in the city here but went ahead announcing conduction of exams as per schedule. While all the universities operating in the city including the Kashmir University and the Central University campus at Nowgam announced daylong closure of the institutions in the wake of gunfight that left two militants dead near Kani Pora on Srinagar outskirts, the CUS went ahead to take the risk of holding exams. While other universities promptly informed media about the closure of their institutions, the CUS posted an update on its website that exams would be held as per schedule. "University Examinations slated for 24th Oct. 2018 shall be conducted as per schedule and a separate Examination, at an appropriate time, shall be conducted for those students who are unable to reach the Examination Centres due to various reasons," reads the notification vide number CUS/Exam/323/2018. Sources said the CUS had called a meeting where the officials decided to go ahead with the exams "much against the directives of the administration." "Basically our university wanted to act differently than others so we wanted to give a test dose," said a CUS official on the condition of anonymity. But amid protests in various areas, the students found it inconvenient to reach the exam venues. "If separate exams are to be held for his paper in future, why not to postpone the exams than risk lives of students," the students complained. But as some of the students managed to reach the exam venues at their respective colleges, the CUS finally decided to postpone the exams. Given the "flip-flop" decision of the varsity officials, the students staged protests. "Our the varsity authorities drunk that they can't take proper decision at proper time?" asked some furious students, adding "It will be difficult for us to reach back home safely." Sources said the complaint of the "confusing decision" of the CUS finally reached Raj Bhawan. Sources said a main reason for the mess was that most of those at the helm in the varsity happen to "be influential people who were given plum postings by the previous PDP government." "But now Raj Bhawan has started looking into complaints of mismanagement and heads will roll soon," said a source in the Civil Secretariat. Despite repeated attempts the CUS VC couldn't be contacted for exams. But a senior official at CUS pleading anonymity said "Out bosses wanted to take a risk and set a new trend that colleges be kept open during protests but unfortunately it didn't work." |
