And still Mehbooba, Omar want J&K and Ladakh to remain one state | No Gita, Ramayana in libraries | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 24: On October 22, the education department of J&K Government sprung a pleasant surprise by asking the directors of the school education department in both Jammu province and Kashmir division to implement the order on keeping in the school and college libraries Urdu copies of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and the Koshur Ramayana authored by Sarwanand Premi for schools. There was nothing wrong with order. Students need to read holy books of all religions to enrich their knowledge. However, the Government order didn't go well with Kashmiri leaders, including NC vice-president Omar Abdullah. They questioned the government order and its intentions and the result was that the weak and meek education department withdrew its order within 24 hours, thus injuring the religious sensitivities of the Hindus across the nation in general and J&K in particular. The police said the order was withdrawn because it could have created law and order problem in Kashmir. "The issue could take an ugly turn and lead to law and order problem in the Valley," a police official was quoted as saying. The statement issued by the police was just uncalled for as it was provocative. As for the education department, which withdrew the order, didn't give any reason as to why it withdrew the order that had been appreciated by the Hindus in J&K and across the nation. As was expected, Kashmiri leaders, leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad and other Muslim leaders in India, including Majid Memon, welcomed the decision, saying the government did the wrong thing by issuing order that Urdu copies of Gita and Ramayana be kept in the school and college libraries and did a right thing by withdrawing the order. The manner in which or the circumstances under with the order was withdrawn has angered the Hindus in J&K and the rest of the country. They have described the decision as an attempt to "erase Hindu culture in the state". It has become a national issue. Many in Jammu on Wednesday asked: "Why should Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh be maintained as a one political unit when the Kashmiri leaders oppose even entry of Gita and Ramayana in our libraries run and maintained by the tax we pay?" "Let Kashmir has its own say; let Jammu and Ladakh have their own separate dispensations within India and under the Indian Constitution. There is no logic in maintaining Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh as one political entity. The time for separation has come," many agitated people today said, and added that "the people of Jammu will never forgive the BJP which has been playing havoc with the minorities in the state in its desperate bid to please Kashmiri leaders". There are cogent reasons to believe that the Gita and Ramayana controversy would further hasten the process leading to the reorganization of the state. |
